2024 January – Declaring my Independence, New Years Swim, Sub Zero, Solo

“If you want something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.” – Thomas Jefferson

Declaring my Independence

Well, I’ve never had enough chicken, Mr Jefferson, so I’m considering declaring my independence from Mum (see what I did there..?) which will leave me in charge of my own shopping.

Do you reckon that will work? I know her credit card number…….  Yeah, that’s a pretty good start.

She’ll never notice.

Yep, it’s a solid plan.

New Years Swim

Yes, it’s beautiful but oh boy it’s cold.

And yes, Mum did go in.

It is just as well I am getting used to doing my own shopping, she’s going to get double pneumonia at this rate.

Sub Zero

See, I told you.

Solo

This is a picture of Mum having completed her solo stuff.

Her Flight Instructor is probably just relieved she is back on the ground safely.  Mum said she really enjoyed it.

But as we all know, she is a bit bonkers.

Well, Happy New Year Everyone!!!

Let’s have a great one shall we?

Saffron’s recommendations this month:

Music:

The Eagles are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1971. With five number-one singles, six number one albums, six Grammy awards and five American Music awards, the Eagles were one of the most successful musical acts of the 1970s in North America and are one of the world’s bestselling artists, having sold more than 200 million records worldwide.

So why have they not been included here before now?

I blame Mum.

If you don’t recognise this stuff you are either very, very young or you’ve been off planet for a while.

Reading:

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck and published by Penguin Modern Classics

Set in the 1930’s and capturing the plight of millions of Americans whose lives had been crushed by the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression, among the most prominent themes in The Grapes of Wrath is the dehumanizing nature of capitalism. Throughout the novel, many characters are forced to act against others for their own economic interests.

‘There ain’t no sin and there ain’t no virtue. There’s just stuff people do’.

Film:

Hamilton: An American Musical is a biographical musical with music, lyrics. Based on the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow the musical covers the life of the American Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton (First Secretary to the Treasury) and his involvement in the American Revolution and the political history of the early United States.

Loads of accolades and worth a watch. Visually stunning.
