2017 – September – Taking the High Ground, Abandoned & Gruesome Finds
Taking the High Ground
This is a picture of me taking to the higher ground – not morally you understand, more like physically and because there is a squirrel in the tree above my head.
It is the closest I have been able to get to them today. I can safely say that there seem to be more squirrels in these woods than there are atoms in the universe.
And that’s a True Fact.
Professor Brian Cox would agree with me if he came for a walk and saw with his own eyes. But since I don’t actually know him I might not like that. So you will just have to take my word for it.
And I’m pretty good at maths.
More than one dog – me – is a bad thing.
More than one squirrel is a good thing.
End of.
Abandoned
Mum has never left me for this long before. She has gone away with her elderly Aunt for goodness knows how long.
I am very sad.
And she’s left me to look after all of the offspring as well.
I am going to have to flex my powers of delegation to ensure they are all kept in order and catering to my every whim.
I reckon I can manage that.
It seems to be working nicely.
Gruesome finds at Chorleywood.
Offspring #2 has nagged me to do more writing. I haven’t done much lately because I have been a busy dog plus I have been getting over Mum going away for 2 weeks and leaving me which is absolutely outrageous behaviour.
I know I was looked after very well but really that is simply enabling behaviour on the part of the offspring.
Thank you very much.
So I may have been sulking a bit.
Which is only fair really.
Anyway, today we went to Chorleywood and I got the fright of my life because someone (someone very weird in my opinion) has left a lot of dead, stuffed human effigies all over the place.
What the…???
The place looks like something out of a Scandi noir or a set for Dr Who where all the scarecrows come to life when you’re not looking at them.
Mum says there are some days when she feels like this.
There is one of Albert Einstein and to be honest if he really looked like that it’s a miracle he managed to have any coherent thoughts about the universe at all.
I sniffed most of them and jumped a bit but none of them moved. Eventually I got bored and started sniffing for rabbits instead.
Saffron’s recommendations this month:
Music: Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music (named after making a list of old cinemas and thinking the name resonated of faded glamour). Lots of great, great songs and Bryan’s distinctive vocals.
Dance Away
Same Old Scene
Love is the Drug
Over You
More than This
Jealous Guy
Avalon
Virginia Plain
Reading (fiction):
‘The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry’ by Rachel Joyce, published by Black Swan
Harold’s journey towards a better version of himself it totemic. Touching and charming as Harold walks the bitter wastelands of regret to the sunlit uplands of redemption. Moving.
Film:
‘Flashbacks of a Fool’ with Daniel Craig, a 2008 British drama – yeah, horribly sad and a good film. At the end, also has the track ‘if there is something’ from Roxy Music (plus lots of other great 70’s music).
