2020 September – Super Snuggly, Disappointment, Chicken Feet, Fool

Super Snuggly

This is a picture of me being super snuggly.

I am slightly less snuggly in this picture

And I have voluntarily de-snuggled myself in this picture because I was too hot.

But I am super comfy now.  The cushion is a win.  Why didn’t Mum think of this before?

Sometimes I do wonder if she cares about me at all.

Disappointment

This is a video of me interacting with an offspring.

lovely me

As it happens, I think the offspring cares about me – but not enough to give me a treat.

Which is a disappointment.

I live with disappointment on an almost constant daily basis I’ll have you know.

Chicken Feet

Vegans and vegetarians look away now.   I’m designed as a carnivore, so this is a picture of me with some carnivorous treats.

It is some dried chicken feet.   I like these.

A lot.

That’s why Mum has bought so many.  I don’t expect they’ll last long though.

Maybe my days of disappointment are over.

For now at least.

Fool

Just for funsy….

Fun Facts: Fool comes from Old French ‘fol’,  ultimately from Latin and meaning ‘bellows’ or ‘windbag’.    In the 14th century, a fool  was probably a jester or clown – sometimes a professional, sometimes an accidental entertainer – so a Court Jester for example.   And in a QI kinda way….   ‘foolscap’ was quite literally the hat worn by a Court Jester, however this word is now used for a size/type of paper which was originally watermarked with a court jester’s cap.   So there.

Saffron’s recommendations this month:

Music:  This month I have been checking out Canadian rock band Nickelback.  Apparently they have been massively criticised on social for their songs being mediocre and formulaic and (by purists?) for being a business first rather than musicians first.   Really?   Well, they seem to have done OK in spite of the criticism levelled at them and some good stuff too imho.   So,  perhaps a little controversial for some people, but here’s my pick of their songs:

Animals

Reading: The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell – just a brilliant writer in my view and published by Sceptre.  Written in 6 parts and connected through one character, Holly Sykes.  And against a backdrop of a war between two immortal groups.   What a great read.

‘What is born must one day die. So says the contract of life, yes? I am here to tell you, however, that in rare instances this iron clause may be…rewritten.’

Or try his other books – there are 9 I think so far.  Cloud Atlas and number9dream are probably the best known.

Films: The Austin Powers films (yeah, baby!)

Maybe start at the begining with:   Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

Featuring Mike Myers, the three Austin Powers films are a glorious spoof romp through 1960’s / 1970’s British spy films.  Affectionately parodying Bond and There’s a Girl in my Soup (Peter Sellers) and with references to London in the swinging 60’s.

Oh, and in subsequent films, Michael Caine as (Dad) Nigel Powers.

Oh, and the cars – a 1961 Jaguar E-type and a 2001 Jaguar XK8 convertible (known as the ‘Shaguars’) with Union Jack paint jobs.

Oh, and Tom Cruise playing Austin Powers….

Seriously, what’s not to like?

In the news:

Almost 3,000 people in the UK test positive for SARS-CoV-2, a 50% increase in a single day and the highest daily total since May

The ‘rule of six’ is enacted – the law provides authority to limit the number of persons in a gathering to no more than six

The UK returns three antique bronze sculptures to India more than 40 years after they were stolen from a Hindu temple

Second wave of Covid-19 means people should work from home if able to do so

88th Le Mans 24 hour race winners are:

Le Mans Prototype (LMP) – Toyota Gazoo

Le Mans Grand Touring Endurance (LMGTE) – Aston Martin

Seriously look up the cars – they are immense – Toyota TS050 Hybrid and the Vantage AMR.
