2023 April – Are We There Yet?, Dippy, Begging, Service Please, Kisses wiv Arron, Stag Do, Sneaky Nap

Are We There Yet?

We went for a super long walk today.

Mum has had to sort out the car insurance which always makes her cross.  Why can’t they just give you the best offer in the first place without Mum having to threaten to leave if they don’t?

Ugh.

Mum was properly  stomping round the field today.  Normally Mum getting cross is funny, but you can see from my face that I’ve lost my sense of humour.    The upside is, now the car insurance is sorted, I still get driven to all the nice places.

Dippy

This is where Mum and her madder than mad friends went for a dip in the river.

It was pretty flooded. They just don’t care.  There wasn’t much swimming apparently as the river just carried them south.  They got covered in mud getting out.

Serves them right.  You wouldn’t catch me doing that.

I admit, I am partial to a muddy puddle but this next level insanity.

Begging

This is me looking pretty skinny (if I say so myself) and in dire need of a treat.  I know there are some chicken feet around somewhere (in the room behind me as it happens).

Mum knows this too.  She simply needs reminding.

I reckon I am doing a decent job of reminding her. Don’t you?  I might have to bark in a while but that is always a last resort.

Guess what, I finally got her attention.

Result.

This is a picture of Kobe doing the same thing.

Staring at humans to get them to feel sorry for you can work surprisingly well.

Service Please

This is the car they have given Mum while hers (mine) is in for service.

What were they thinking?  I cannot get in the boot.

What was Mum thinking accepting this? Well, clearly she wasn’t thinking at all was she?

Honestly. I give up.

It’s as if I don’t exist.

Kisses wiv Arron

Mum has got her (my) car back and taken me to see Emma and Arron. They like me. I quite enjoy being here actually. Lots of treats.

I am being left in charge of Arron while Mum and Emma go off to get Emma’s wedding dress sorted.   I have no idea what a wedding dress is but it doesn’t sound much like my cup of tea.

Mum got lost in Liverpool on the way here. We went through the tunnel which was exciting but unnecessary, as it turns out. The sat nav needs upgrading but you know what she’s like with technology.  So old fashioned.

Apparently the wedding dress thing went well and Mum cried.

Usual story – can’t take her anywhere.

Stag Do

Humans are a mystery aren’t they?  Arron, you look wonderful, obviously.

Are you getting married in that?

Just asking…

Sneaky Nap

I was having a little bit of a chew on my chew stick and then it all became just too much for me so I have had to have a little nap. You can just see the end of the chew stick sticking out of my mouth.

These chew sticks are hard work I’ll have you know. You should try one and then you’ll understand exactly what I mean.

Exhausting.

Reading:

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty – James Thurber published by Penguin modern classics. A collection of short stories.

The inside cover says this:

‘Born in 1894 in Columbus, Ontario he worked at the American Embassy in Paris and then went into journalism, writing and sketching cartoons at the New Yorker. As a child he had been blinded in one eye and in later life went completely blind but continued working. His work was easy to recognise but hard to define. He created a world in which mournfully sagacious hounds loom over frightened little men who are trying to master life’s problems. His drawings and writings were marked with economy, wry humour and his own blend of precision and fantasy. These qualities are abundantly apparent in the story of his most famous character, Walter Mitty, the shy dreamer whose secret life gloriously makes up for his failures in real life.’

Film:

This month it’s an absolute classic – Casablanca

A 1942 American romantic drama directed by Michael Curtiz and starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Paul Henreid. Set during World War II, it focuses on an American expatriate Rick (Bogart) who must choose between his love for a woman Ilsa (Bergman) and helping her husband (Henreid), a Czechoslovak resitance leader, escape from the Vichy-controlled city of Casablanca to continue his fight against the Germans.   The screenplay is based on an unproduced stageplay called ‘Everybody comes to Rick’s’.

Casablanca went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, Curtiz was selected as Best Director and the Epsteins and Koch were honored for Best Adapted Screenplay. Its reputation has gradually grown, to the point that its lead characters,  theme song and memorable lines have all become iconic.

“Here’s looking at you, kid”

“We’ll always have Paris”

“Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine”

The film consistently ranks near the top of lists of the greatest films in history. It’s a must see if you haven’t already……
